Prison work

10% of the population are aged 18-24 and yet a third of those sent to prison every are young people

 

70% from fatherless families

 

70% have grown up in care

 

33% of young offenders have a reading age of below 7 25% have learning difficulties

 

25% suffered neglect or childhood abuse

 

40% were homeless as children 90% excluded from school

 

70% describe their educational achievement's as nil1 million young people in the UK are NEET these young people become 20 times more likely to commit a crime

 

70% re-offend within a year of release

 

We will soon be working in Feltham Young Offenders institute where we will be delivering alternative education and mentoring. We will be supporting the chaplain within the prison to offer support and guidance to the young offenders to tackle these underlying factors that predispose young people to offending.
